16th BIRTHDAY - ideas - Gas Money idea, Donuts, Candy Cake - Special teen milestone bday

16th birthday is such a milestone and deserves an extra special celebration.

We were originally NOT going to get him a vehicle for his 16th birthday. I had to work and pay for my truck and insurance when I was younger. I think you appreciate it more. Now what changed our mind.....both my car and hubby's car are acting up. By acting up, I mean my braking system is failing and we just spent $2300, $1300, $3000 for three separate visits to between his car and mine in the last three months. PLUS, I had to get two new front tires a few weeks back after a flat tire. UGH! And remember, my braking system is still failing. I have no brakes for about 2-4 mins when I first put it in reverse. It's a slow drag but you roll and jerks when you have brakes. Soooooo, we are getting it "for him" but it definitely will be used while we fix other car issues.

So enough with the downer stuff....now for his celebration stuff!!!!

Found these giant metallic balloons at Michael's and used a 50% off coupon for each.

I helped him make THIS candy cake in December for his friend and he made a comment about wanting one with Hersey's Cookies and Cream bars. TA-DA!!!

I decided to make his rectangle and used a recycled box of cereal, fruit roll ups, and protein bars. He loves green so I made the base green to match his donuts. Gold metallic shreds to match his balloons.

It's not new but new to him. 

I found this GIANT red bow online. You just pull the strings and the bow pops open. So cool!

Finally, personalized donuts!!!! He loved them!!!

I ordered these for my boss last year and they were a huge hit.

We had a "snow day" and school was canceled. He was suppose to share them with his friends. We had donuts for breakfast and lunch and still have a ton left.

Can you freeze donuts? Lol.

I feel like I could post almost everyday but sometimes it's a repeat idea or not enough for a whole post. Here are some ideas, tips, or tricks that are too cute not to share. They are very random and from all times during the year.

BIRTHDAY LUNCH

Happy Birthday wrapped lunch. I've done this in the past but haven't had a birthday fall on a school day in awhile. He was so excited and texted, "Thank you sooooo much!" He sat down first and when he opened his lunch bag the kids next to him said he had to wait for all his friends to see. Oh and I did hear that I'm the best Mom ever. <3

CHOCOLATE DIPPED FRUIT

Cupcake? Cookie? What is it??? Pineapple shaped like a cupcake and dipped in chocolate! He said it was so good! April Fool's idea or cute lunch snack.



My Keurig stopped working. ((sniffle)) The light came on to descale so I filled the water container with vinegar and water, removed coffee pod, rinsed, and hit run (large cup light.) It just dripped and dripped. I tried for over 40 mins and only a 1/3 cup ran. I was almost ready to get a new machine! Plus I hadn't had my coffee!!!

 I read to clean the needle that punctures the coffee pod because it can get clogged. It has three holes near the top but no way that little thing could all of a sudden stop my whole machine. I used a paperclip to clear one hole and water started draining. I cleared all three and tried again. IT RAN!!! I can not believe the needle shut my whole machine down and wouldn't run anything.

 I decided to descale since I started the process. I used a straw to blow air into the water intake to clear the hose. It has two holes so I put the straw over one and covered the other with my thumb. When I blew the air it made bubbles where the base of the water container sits. I did that a few times and then ran the vinegar/water mixer until I couldn't smell it anymore. It took about 7-8 refills until I felt like I wasn't going to drink coffee that taste like vinegar. Lol!

 I'm so excited it works PERFECTLY!!!

I had more fun with this one. He didn't think it was fun idea at first. Then I told him to get out the broom and get to "playing" your new game. LOL!!!

SECRET MESSAGE

Write a message with a toothpick on a banana and by lunchtime the message shows up! My son LOVED this. 

WELCOME DOOR HANGERS

These would be cute for new neighbors or new co-worker. 

I made these for our new office building. We wanted to introduce ourselves and invite them to come say HI :) The whole building loved them.

I made all different tags with the company logo and bagged. One short ribbon to tie the bag and one long ribbon to hang. 

HALLOWEEN CANDY CAKE

I've made this cake several times but usually with Kit Kat candy. It was for a friend of my boys and we had all this leftover Halloween candy. She loved it! You can see the full tutorial HERE.

BIRTHDAY CAKE

This was a last minute cake idea and I forgot to get candles. UGH! I went to the store and they were out of 1 for the 13 I needed. Well, I found these HAPPY BIRTHDAY candles and guess what!???? It's THIRTEEN candles!!! Ahhh WIN! I would love to say I planned this but totally didn't. :)

TOFFEE BARK

I've made this so many times with tons of different variations but never a full post. I'll share all the cool combos but for now I'll give you quick photo tutorial. 

These are really cool. Mini bags of candy melts in all colors.  They would work perfect for this idea.

Chocolate mini M&M and Kit Kat Cake - {{Happy 12th Birthday}}

My first born little boy turns TWELVE!!! I can barley say that without a mild panic attack. {{gulp}} One year from a teenager!? YIKES!!!

For his birthday I usually make cupcakes because it's a mold and can't really be messed up. It's amazing I can make awesome truffles, cookies, cupcakes but not a cake. Seriously! My list of fail cakes can go on and on. I saw this M&M and Kit Kat cake and went for it. Totally ready with cupcake back-ups.

Surprisingly, I think this cake can't be messed up. YES!!!!! My kinda cake!

I found these snack packs of Kit Kat's for 1.00 (6) and one package of 8 that I must have grabbed at another store. I used 3 1/2 packs and one bag of mini M&M's with some left over. They were on sale and cheaper than the regular M&M's.

Made two round cakes (will check pans for size) and stacked them. They were so uneven and falling apart. My usual cake disaster. I just filled everything in with icing.

Started lining the Kit Kat's around the edge

So far so good. They stayed pretty well but wasn't sure if they would once I started pouring the M&M's on top

I ended up tying a ribbon around the cake

Added my candles (not centered and drove me CRAZY)

Started filling in the M&M's. Since the cake was so uneven one side was really filled with M&M's and the other side you could kinda see the icing.

With the cake completely hidden by candy it looks GREAT!!!

We did this all before school so quick sprinkles on cinnamon rolls for his bday breakfast

Still willing to do a quick photoshoot after I got off work. A SUPER SWEET friend stopped by with a gift and 12 balloons. Made these pictures perfect!!!

After dinner we cut the cake

It cuts really nice too!!! Best cake ever!!! I was totally not expecting it to cut at all. I thought all the M&M's would just spill out and Kit Kats fall off.
