I've made this caramel apple pie a few times and always told it's AH-MAZING! I recently made two for a teacher luncheon and heard lots of ooooh's and ahhhh's.
Not only is it easy to make and delicious but adding the edible eye catching artwork makes it even better.
You need:
6-7 apples (peeled and sliced)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons of all-purpose
1/4 cup white sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
Pre-made pie crust (2 rolls per package)
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons of all-purpose
1/4 cup white sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
Pre-made pie crust (2 rolls per package)
1 can of homemade or store bought caramel
If you use two different apples, sweet and tart, it turns out so much better.
Peeled and sliced - I used honey crisp and granny smith.
In a large bowl mix all dry ingredients first. Mix add apples and lemon juice. Then mix together until all the apples are coated.
I used the same premade pie dough from my POT PIE recipe.
Roll out the dough in pie pan and use a fork to make holes around the bottom to make sure it cooked through.
Add apples to pie pan.
Cover with caramel.
Homemade caramel sauce.....OH.MY.GOODNESS!!!!!! I absolutely LOVE this stuff. I keep a can or two in the fridge for dipping apples or drizzle on ice cream. So good!
If you don't have time you can use a can of Dulce de Leche (warmed.) It's usually next to condensed sweetened milk cans down the baking isle.
Weave lattice. The trick is to use every other strip of dough for the vertical pattern. Then the horizontal pattern will be similar lengths of dough. You will have some extra.
It's much easier without caramel because once you lay one down it sticks in the caramel. I could tell a little bit after baking but if you are looking at the artwork you don't even notice. And now you'll notice only because I told you. Dang it! :)
Use the left over dough and roll out to fit my cookie cutter shape. It's about the same thickness as the rolled out pie crust.
I love the extra little details.
Now time to paint!
I used the same food coloring from the baking rainbow cake in a jar post.
Just paint on colors evenly and try to cover the entire surface.
It's so easy for a fantastic presentation.
You can brush with egg whites but I didn't on these pies.
Bake at 425 degrees for 15 mins and reduce heat to 375 degrees. Total baking time 40-45 mins.
When you decrease the temperature, also put a foil ring to cover the edges so they don't get too dark.
PERFECT!!!!
The one on the right has the straight cut lines and I almost like it better.
{{drooling}} It smells so good in the house!!!
Also made one for Pi Day but without the caramel.
